The Kaiapoi rugby team faced Ohoka at home in the first round of the Canterbury Country Combined competition. Ohoka got off the mark first, but Kaiapoi were able to assert their dominance to win 31-12 in the end. Glenmark Cheviot had 6 debutants, Andrew Hull, Ben Renton, Ollie Sproat, Heath Cruickshank, Blair Norton, and Briarly Brown, for their match against Oxford. Glemark Cheviot got out to an 11-0 lead by halftime, and a fairly even second half saw them get the win 25-10. It was a close match for Saracens against Ashley. The halftime score was 17-5 to Saracens, but Ashley pushed them hard in the second half, but were denied a full comeback. The final score 24-22 to Saracens. In another hard-fought match, Hurunui overcame Woodend 15-12. Points: Kaiapoi 5, Glenmark Cheviot 4, Hurunui 4, Saracens 4, Ashley 2, Woodend 1, Oxford 0, Ohoka 0. It was a tough start to the Metro women’s competition for the Kaiapoi Women’s team, going down 0-78 to University of Canterbury.
