The North Canterbury Division One rugby competition began over the weekend. Saracens took on Ashley, with the Rakahuri Shield on the line. Ashley went into the halftime break with a slight lead 8-6. The match continued to be tightly contested, but it was Saracens who were the eventual winners 22-18. Hurunui were rampant in their match with Woodend at Gladstone Park. The home side struggled throughout the first half to retain any ball and were defeated 12-53. Glenmark Cheviot also had a dominant win over Oxford 45-21, and Kaiapoi defeated Ohoka 44-17. Rangiora High School travelled down to Timaru in the first round of UC Championship secondary school competition. They defeated Roncalli Aoraki 25-12. The Canterbury Rugby Union Women’s competition also started this weekend. Kaiapoi met Lincoln University in Lincoln and ran out winner 29-22 in a hard fought battle.
