The Rangiora High School 1st XV were narrowly defeated by the UC Championship leaders, Christchurch Boys High School, 15-20. Rangiora were hot off the mark scoring in the first few minutes when fullback Tamatoa Nicholas glided through a hole in the CBHS backline, to score in the corner for a 5-0 lead. However, they conceded a penalty soon after and the gap closed to 2 points, 5-3. Boys High were the next to score again, when they found the try line, and took the lead 5-8. They too conceded a penalty just as they got in front, and Kaleb McCabe was able to tie the match up 8-8. And it looked as if that would be the halftime score until Christchurch Boys were able to chip deep and drive over the ensuing ruck for a try on the stroke of halftime, 8-15. Midway through the second half Rangiora lit up the crowd, as Harry Gartery dived in at the corner. After some discussion the try was awarded, and Kaleb McCabe converted from the sideline to tie the match up 15-15. Only minutes later though, Boys High would score the match winning try, and despite their best efforts Rangiora couldn’t hit back. The final score 15-20 to CBHS. Rangiora High School have certainly reinforced their reputation for being able to match it with the traditional schoolboy rugby big guns, and this weekend they will have a chance to climb back up the ladder as they play bottom placed Lincoln Combined.
