The Battle of Jacks Ridge Rallysprint featured some of the best rally drivers in the country and some of the biggest names in New Zealand motorsport. Among them was North Canterbury rally driver Matt Summerfield. The event saw competitors blast around 2km of purpose-built gravel road, featuring high speed jumps, technical corners and close proximity to spectators, on former New Zealand champion, Andrew Hawkeswood’s Whitford property. With the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto Island and the Auckland City skyline as a backdrop, Jacks Ridge was a spectacular location and just 20 minutes from the Auckland CBD. The event was won by Shane van Gisbergen, who made an emphatic debut in a top-flight rally car driving a Team Ralliart prepared Mitsubishi Mirage AP4. The favourite to win the event, Haydon Paddon, crashed during the Top 8. He rolled his modified Hyundai i20 AP4++ after clipping an embankment, damaging his car but he walked away unscathed. Matt Summerfield squeezed his way into the top eight, and then the top four, but bowed out to finish in a very impressive fourth place overall, beating the top three seeds along the way. Summerfield was, “absolutely stoked” with the result. He was aiming for a top eight placing, and finishing fourth was, “massive,” and a credit to his team.
